Facts About Destin/Fort Walton Beach Airport

If you travel to the Emerald Coast you probably wonder why the airport is called VPS.  The Destin – Fort Walton Beach Airport VPS has a long history and it has changed its name through the years.   To understand why Destin airport has the airport code “VPS” you need to know a little background.

The airport is close to Destin but it’s not in Destin; and if you want to come to Destin, the airport you want to use VPS because it is the closest airport to Destin, Florida.

Most interesting is VPS airport shares runways with Eglin Air Force Base. The reason planes taxi so long on the runways is because the Air Force has dedicated certain runways for commercial airlines at VPS airport.  Other runways are used for the Military. And they probably share some of the same runways.

The physical address of Destin – Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) Airport is  1701 State Road 85 North, Eglin AFB, FL 32542.  So it is neither in Fort Walton Beach nor Destin at all! It is actually located within Eglin Air Force Base.
